Extinction is not an option! At the root of the rhino crisis is the myth that rhino horn contains curative properties. For that reason, World Rhino Day 2011 is highlighting efforts to debunk the myth and eliminate the demand for rhino horn. The demand for rhino horn has created a very high value for horn which makes slaughtering rhino a very financially attractive option for organized crime syndicates and their foot soldiers. This demand is based on the entirely false belief that rhino horn has incredible medicinal properties. The tragedy is that, apart from ruthless rhino horn trafficking cartels lining their pockets, nobody benefits from rhino horn. It is in fact compacted hair (keratin) and has the same medicinal properties as your own fingernails or hair - which is none whatsoever. Rhino, as a species, are under threat because of greed and ignorance. We aim to change that. World Rhino Day 2011 is a team effort led by Zimbabwe-based Chishakwe Ranch and US-based Saving Rhinos LLC.

What did this baby do to deserve this? What did its mother do to suffer in the hands of humans?
We should hang our heads in shame for the way we treat wildlife....There is no forgiveness for poachers....if I have to give my place to go to heaven if it means a poacher would go to hell...I would gladly do that....

Poachers in Save Valley Conservancy, Zimbabwe brutally attacked a dehorned black rhino. The animal was found wandering around in pain and is being treated. The authorities should allow conservators to use weapons to address the problem of poachers.

Rhino poachers shot dead

Two poachers have been shot dead in the Kruger National Park, in Mpumalanga, SA National Parks said.

Spokesman William Mabasa said rangers heard gunshots in the park on Monday night and went to investigate. They found the two chopping the horn from a dead rhino.

"A shoot-out ensued and the two were shot dead," he said.

The tiger is our national heritage. It adorns our coat-of-arms and deserves to be treated with dignity , not sedated and used for photography sessions.

Saddened by a series of 'not so good news' about Tigers

I REFER to “Uproar over abused tiger claim” (The Star, May 22). Lately, there has been a series of “not so good news” about our tigers. The Year of the Tiger kicked off with a video footage shown on British national news in February of poachers in Malaysia who gloated over the carcass of a Malayan Tiger.

Then, a tiger was brutally slain by some orang asli in Bukit Tapah Forest Reserve in Sungkai, Perak. Now, this video depicts a tiger sedated and used for photography sessions with visitors to a local animal park. When I first viewed the video in early May, I was totally appalled to say the least. What more awaits our Big Cats?

It is heart-wrenching to see the manner the tiger is handled in the video; its head being pushed, whiskers pulled and its head/body just lying limp like a toy. This is definitely not “extra coaxing” as stated in the report. There is another term for it, and it is called “abuse”.

It is evident from the video that the tiger is sedated and not “very tame and comfortable around humans” as claimed.

It is sad to see a majestic creature being treated in such an inhumane manner. What is the point of increasing or doubling the number of Malayan Tigers when we can't even take care of the existing ones?

The tiger, which is supposed to be the nation's pride as it is represented on Malaysia's coat of arms, should be treated with greater dignity.

There are only about 500 tigers left in Malaysia. If this state of affairs continues, it won't be long before they become extinct.

Animals are not meant to entertain humans. Those who are depicted in the video taking pictures with the poor tiger should be ashamed of themselves.

Uproar over abused tiger claim

MALACCA: A 500ha resort in Alor Gajah, with its own safari, has attracted the attention of animal lovers and authorities here over a video clip on the Internet allegedly showing the abuse of a drugged tiger during a photography session.

The two-minute clip first appeared on YouTube in February with the title “Tiger Being Abused For Money.”

It shows what seems to be a heavily sedated tiger on a raised platform and occasionally being propped up by its handler.

The recording also includes an audio recording of an unknown person questioning, in Cantonese, the alleged mistreatment of the tiger.

The person also mentions that she was told that patrons had to fork out RM15 to pose for photographs with the tiger.

When contacted, Malacca Society Against the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) president Vincent Low said he was not shocked by such allegations as they had received complaints about the resort previously.

“It is a wild animal and should not be subjected to such treatment. Not only is it inhumane to treat the tiger in such a manner, it is also dangerous for patrons,” he said.

A Famosa Resort general manager Allan Chee denied the abuse allegation.

“There is no evidence that the tiger was drugged or abused by its handler,” he said, adding that he was aware of the video clip and had received numerous inquiries from the public.

Chee said the animal was a captive-bred tiger and was considered very tame and comfortable around humans.

“Tigers are nocturnal and those here are very well fed and become very lazy and lethargic during the mid-morning. So, it is natural that the handlers had to use extra coaxing to move the heavy tiger into position,” he said.

He also denied the resort charged RM15 for patrons to take photographs with the tiger.

“We only charge patrons if they ask us to photograph them with our instant camera,” he said.

A check revealed the resort had removed all negative comments from its Facebook fan page.

It is learnt that WWF Malaysia had also received numerous complaints over the video and had advised those concerned to take it up with the Wildlife and National Parks Department.

It is learnt that SPCA had submitted its recommendation to the department to ensure that animals at the resort were not abused.

Personal Thoughts on the MUET Colloquium

The R & D on wildlife conservation was a great hit among the Lower Science Three students. I am glad to know that 26 young adults are going to fight for the rights of animals, from now on. The positive response from them is truly very encouraging. I asked them to share their personal response/review on the R & D (while remaining anonymous) and it is encouraging to note that not only did the research help to raise awareness among them on the issues related to wildlife, it also made them appreciate the decision they made in doing the Pre-U Programme. I really didn't expect the MUET research to have such a profound impact on them. it is indeed a motivation for me to conduct more studies such as this that would help create awareness on certain prevailing issues as well as to help them improve in the four skills of the English Language.
Their level of confidence is higher now and the research has also helped the class to work as a team. It has managed to bring them closer as classmates and i feel this is a significant 'by-product' of the research. In their personal reviews, i noticed that most of them mentioned that while carrying out the research, all of them were able to cooperate with each other and that formed a stronger bond among them.
In a nutshell, the whole thing wasn't purely academic. It helped to develop the students as individuals and to do some serious soul-searching about wildlife and how they can contribute in a small way to help protect and save them.
The real punch was when they told me that they have decided to adopt an animal online. It is really great to know that these young people are willing to go the extra mile to show their support for the conservation of wildlife.

I dedicate this blog to all the magnificent creatures created by The Almighty. Animals have never failed to fascinate me. Sometimes when i look at beautiful birds and leopards and tigers....i see God as an artist...the greatest artist that is...as only He could have 'painted' them so wonderfully and perfectly...going into minute details...every stroke carefully pondered upon ; every line fitting onto the animal. we only need to look at animals to reaffirm our faith in God. as they cannot exist on they own without divine intervention.
